In 1999, I flew up to Portland, Oregon, to visit the Tinnitus Clinic at the University Hospital there. I had never been there before, but found the city to be a lovely, vibrant place with walkable, tree-lined downtown streets, and the Willamette River flowing through it. It was a pleasant summer evening, and tourists and locals filled the streets and restaurants, many with outdoor seating available. Wow, I thought, what a wonderful place to live.
Fast forward twenty-seven years. In the downtown area and much of the immediate area adjacent to it, a dystopic transformation has occurred. Homeless encampments abound. Tent cities are populated with drug-addled zombies that defacate, urinate, and copulate in full view of passersby, who have to navigate a putrid sea of excrement, vomit, and discarded hypodermic needles. What happened?
In a word, “Progressiveism”. The downtown area has a business vacancy rate of 30 percent, rivaling other West Coast cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles. All of these places are “Sanctuary Cities” in “Sanctuary States.” All Democrat controlled, they feel they have the right to defy federal laws and regulations with impunity, and will continue to do so. Unless……..
The federal government begins to arrest, try, and incarcerate politicians and bureaucrats on a wholesale basis. Yes, liberal judges will attempt to impede the process by declaring the arrests illegal, but that’s where the rubber will begin to hit the road big time.
When Barack Obama promised to “fundamentally transform America,” many people thought that would be in a positive way, but what has happened since he took the oath of office in January of 2009, with his Vice President Joe Biden close behind, has been anything but.
We have gone from a place where the races were finally beginning to respect each other as EQUAL citizens of a country where hard work would be rewarded, into a place where that concept has almost become a laughing stock. Those who have figured out ways to scam the system are the role models to far too many American youth.
Rather than demand excellence from students, the teachers’ unions have pushed too many school districts into a “go along to get along” mentality, where many high school graduates are functionally illiterate, unable to read or write at a second-grade level of only a few years ago.
Then, incredibly, those graduates are admitted to some of our most prestigious colleges and universities on a DEI quota system that requires they be given remedial classes just to bring them up to minimum admission standards, while far more deserving candidates are denied access to the schools. Distinguished college professor and political commentator Victor Davis Hanson has described this travesty in detail many times.
Meanwhile, many American cities have been turned into almost literal war zones of crime and corruption, where violent criminals go through a revolving door criminal justice system. Recidivism is the norm, not the exception, and many of the minority youth have absolutely no respect for the law.
The recent example of black youth violently trashing a Chipotle restaurant in the Shipyard Mall in Washington, DC, is a classic example of what Democrat run cities have morphed into in the last two decades. It’s not pretty, and these are also some of the places with the strictest “Gun Control” laws that supposedly prevent crime, but instead prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves against the roving bands of thugs.
We are either a country of laws, or we are not. You can’t just pick and choose which laws you will obey and which you will ignore. That is anarchy, pure and simple. Enough of the “sanctuary” B.S!
It is illegal, and must be challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court. I’d love to see the liberal justices, particularly Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, explain why it’s not.
The border is once again being challenged by the cartels and coyotes. It must be completely sealed, and ALL the illegals rounded up and deported. Don’t say that can’t be done. It MUST be done. Trump has two and a half years to turn the Ship of State around. Pray to God, he can do it, or we will drift into armed conflict and civil war.
